What is Ska?

Posted by HyruleanHyroe - March 23rd, 2008

It occurs to me that a LOT of people have no idea what Ska is. Either that, or they don't freaking care. They seem to treat the Ska section of the audio portal as a dumping ground for whatever crap they think up, even though there's a miscellaneous section for just such crap. It makes me kind of mad.

Ah, well. Ska is, was, and always will be the underdog. That's part of it's charm. It's that poor, ugly, unwanted puppy that no one wants, but when one lucky person takes it in, gives it attention, it ends up being a lovable pet that makes you happier than any other you've had.

It does. Ska is happiness. And Emo music is a deadly sin.

That's all I got fer now.

What is ska? I don't know what it is.

Ska originated in Jamaica as a mixture of Jazz, Calypso, and Mento. That's not what it is now. The majority of modern Ska bands can be described simply as punk/rock with horns. Emphasis on offbeats, Ska chords (top three notes of a major chord, I believe), upbeat tempo. It's great to dance to, listen to, do whatever to.

You want an example, try searching for 'Reel Big Fish' or 'Mighty Mighty Bosstones' on youtube, check out a music video or two. Sell Out and Take On Me are two personal favorites of mine, along with Royal Oil by the Bosstones. Hope you like!

Agreed. Wholeheartedly agreed. I come to the ska section looking for, well, ska music, not garbage. Chalk it up to inadequate moderation on the audio portal end of Newgrounds, I guess.

The good news is, I'm pretty sure they're working on updating the moderator tools to allow increased flexibility for mods, which will hopefully include recategorizing and/or deleting content that doesn't fit. But, since you're a contributing, legitimate artist, and your content is ranked highly, and you've been on the site for 3+ years, it might not hurt for you to send a note Tom Fulp's way, letting him know of your concerns.

Good luck.

Well thanks for the vote of confidence, there, Omgee! I hope you're right about the moderator updates. I can't stand the lax enforcement of genres here. As far as alerting Mr. Fulp to my concerns, that's not a bad idea at all. Every little complaint helps spur them to action, right?

Ska is the best!
I don't know why, but almost no one around me knows about it.
I've found only one person who interests in it a bit.

I really like your music!
GOOD LUCK!

It's because people hate being happy. I don't know why. Rest assured, though, Ska fans are true fans. Quality over quantity, eh?

Thanks for the enthusiasm, you're awesome, and THANK YOU! :D

"Emo music is a deadly sin."
I like Emo music.

Also, I can't wait for more music from you.

Lol, well I guess that'd make you a sinner with a chance at repentance.

But seriously, your musical tastes are your own business, and if they include us, so much the better! Thanks for listening, we're kicking it back in gear to get this recording done!

Great, because I have most of your songs from NG one my iPod now.
Any particular reason you don't like Emo?

Well, I as a person, not a band, have a very personal grudge against Emo kids, which I will not go into. However, even if that were not the case, I think I'm just too generally happy-go-lucky to get into it. It makes me sad. I don't like that.

But Ska makes me happy and chipper!

Most of my friends are emo. And I like lots of emo music.
Who I REALLY don't like, is rap and rappers and gangster-fags.

Awww, rap ain't so bad. Gangsta-fags, yes. Hate those guys. But there does exist good rap in the world, if you look for it.

What's with the trumpet playing at the end of I Burn Bridges? It's really annoying. Especially the huge time it takes to get there.

It's a 'secret song' on the album. It's supposed to take a long time, so it's like a hidden, unlisted treat for those who leave their CD players playing after the CD ends, lol.

I like Ska a bit more now.
My favorite Ska Band is Reel Big Fish, no offence.

None taken! RBF is my fave, too. They just have a fantastic sound, and the vocal harmonies and mind-blowing. We saw them live, and our bassist and drummer got their picture taken with Aaron. What lucky jerks.

lol thnx for the reply to my review on "never, mabey, forever" but in not a dude haha xD thnx anyway, gd song

Haha, sorry, my mistake! It's easy to assume everyone I talk to is a guy, since I am. Female listeners = awesome! You = awesome! Ska = awesome! Yay!

i'm into pretty much any type of music except country and rap/hip hop. so yeah, i like some punk, some emo, not really into much heavy metal, although i occasionally find one or 2 metal songs i like. but ska, jazz, and other styles like that are really good, i can listen to it and relax and stuff. i work til 1 in the morning, and it's nice to be able to chill for a while after i get home before i go to bed. nobody in their right mind listens to metal at 1 in the morning when they want to go to bed.
*shakes head*
keep up the good work, i love your stuff.

i think bands like hawthorne heights have given emo a bad name.
bands like bright eyes and jimmy eat world make great music.
